Question 1: Have You Ever Worked Inside a Healthcare Practice?
This is the most important question. An AI consultant who has only read about healthcare operations will miss the nuances that determine whether an implementation succeeds or fails. The difference between how a chiropractor's front desk operates and how a behavioral health practice manages intake is enormous.
If the consultant has not experienced these workflows firsthand, their recommendations will be generic at best and harmful at worst.
Question 2: How Many Practices Have You Served, and in Which Specialties?
Beware of consultants who have "worked with healthcare clients" but cannot name specialties or provide scale. Ask for specifics: how many practices, which verticals, what types of implementations.
Scale matters because patterns only emerge across many practices. A consultant who has worked with 5 practices is still learning. One who has worked with 500 has seen every failure mode and knows how to avoid them.
Question 3: What Is Your HIPAA Compliance Process?
This is a litmus test. A qualified healthcare AI consultant should bring up HIPAA before you do. If they wait for you to ask — or worse, seem uncertain about BAA requirements, PHI handling, or compliance documentation — they are not qualified to advise a medical practice on AI implementation.
Questions 4 and 5: Results and Active Implementation
Question 4: Can you show documented results from healthcare clients? Ask for specific, measurable outcomes: revenue increases, time savings, patient volume growth, no-show rate reductions. Not testimonials — actual operational results with numbers.
Question 5: Are you currently implementing these systems in active practices? The AI landscape changes monthly. New tools launch, existing tools update their compliance status, and best practices evolve. A consultant who implemented AI systems two years ago and has been teaching about it ever since is already out of date.
I started in healthcare operations in 2017. In 2020, I launched ModFX Media, which has served over 500 doctors across 28 verticals. HIPAA compliance is foundational to every recommendation I make. My documented results include practices achieving 312% organic traffic growth, $203K in monthly revenue added, and 4.7x returns on marketing spend.
